The Tree Peonies of Hasedera Temple
It is said that the famous tree peony originated as a gift of gratitude from Madam Mezu, Queen of the T'ang Dynasty, to express her thanks for spiritual enlightenment from Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. There are now 150 varieties and approximately 7000 trees in existence. Like an elegant floral painting the tree peonies spread outwards, blooming along the sides of the eastern road approaching the shrine, known as the Ascending Corridors, and around the Honbo (priest's residence).

Speech given by the university orator of Memorial University Dr. Dale Foster on the occasion of Dr. Roland Martin receiving an honorary doctor of laws degree for his contributions in the private and public sectors at the 10 a.m. session of spring convocation on May 26, 2006. (Link)

His accomplishments began early. Four years after arriving on the brand new Memorial campus in 1961 he had earned his bachelor of commerce degree. He was not only a good student, but in the warrior spirit of Mars, a feisty hockey player and a member of the first Memorial team to win the coveted Boyle Trophy. Like other great warriors, Rollie Martin knew also the power of the pen: in his role as university news editor for The Evening Telegram, he met, and interviewed, one of Memorial's top female swimmers, Sue Campbell- his headline for the story read "Surging Swimming Sue." What young woman could resist a feisty hockey player with a flair for alliteration? Roland and Sue have been married for almost 40 years.
